Planning the Perfect New Year’s Eve Proposal

If you’re planning to propose to your loved one, you’re probably feeling excited, unnerved and a little anxious about the upcoming event.

Asking your partner to spend the rest of their life with you is an incredibly daunting question - and that is the way it should be. Although spontaneous proposals may seem romantic, a lot of thought should be put into considering whether you want to spend the rest of your life with your current spouse, and there are a few do's and dont's.

New Year's Eve is synonymous with new beginnings, and a marriage proposal echoes this message. Asking your boyfriend/girlfriend to give themselves to you for the rest of their life means that you are ready to move onto the next chapter with that person.

New Year's Eve is the fourth most popular time of year of popping the question to your potential betrothed, with Christmas Eve and Valentine's Day taking the top places. A New Year's Eve proposal is one that should be filled with magic, surprise and love. Proposing on NYE will make the beginning of 2017 much more meaningful as you are entering the New Year having made the ultimate commitment to the love of your life. Here are a few things you should consider;

Discuss Marriage Prior to the Proposal

We don't need to tell you what a big commitment marriage is, but you and your partner should discuss marriage and the direction you want your life to go before you pop the question. Marriage is more than just being committed to the relationship; it is about being committed to your other half when it gets tough. Marriage is about actively trying to maintain the relationship, and compromising so that it works, even when you don't necessarily want to. Once it is clear that you're both on the same page, you can go ahead and start planning for the big question.

Make Sure Your Partner Likes Public Gestures

If your partner enjoys being at the centre of attention, and is comfortable with all eyes being on them, then proposing in public, or a New Year's Eve destination proposal may be the right way to go. However, if your partner hates the idea of public speaking, and being surrounded by crowds of people with the attention being averted to them then we suggest finding a quiet corner or room to pop the question. When it comes to discussing marriage, ask your partner what he/she would be comfortable with, as asking them in front of people may make them feel as if they're backed into a corner and unable to say anything other than, "yes".

The NYE Setting Holds Surprises

With so many NYE events out there, you do not have to think about booking a table at a restaurant or stress over creating a surrounding that could potentially give away clue about the upcoming question. As many New Year's Eve dinners and parties are black-tie and glamorous, the expectation of a proposal will be minimal - especially as Christmas is over and Valentine's Day is around the corner. If you choose to have a photographer, you'll both look really good as you'll be dressed up. So many positives!

Propose at Midnight to Make It Memorable

No one likes to admit it, but being kissed at midnight and going into the New Year surrounded by friends and family is something we all look forward to every year. Kissing your spouse as the clock strikes 12 is romantic, but imagine getting down on one knee (or however you choose to propose) as the countdown comes to an end... It certainly will not be expected, and will be the most memorable New Year's Eve the pair of you will ever have.

...or Propose on New Year's Day

As mentioned earlier, public proposals may or may not be yours (or your partner's) cup of tea. If you are going to an event that doesn't offer any privacy, or an evening affair is not the place that you want to pop the question, then getting down on one knee on New Year's Day is also a wonderful way to propose. New Year's Day is the first blank page of a new start, so give it an opening paragraph to remember.

Think about the Ring

An engagement ring is a significant investment to make; especially when it can cost anywhere from a month's salary to an entire year's salary. If you want to surprise your desired betrothed with an engagement ring, then make sure to get the correct size (although this can be rectified) and speak to their close friends and family to find out the style of ring they'd like.
